How To Celebrate Your Life

We live in a busy world these days. We are surrounded by so many things, events, and activities that can completely overstimulate us on a daily basis. Think about the many times you find yourself asking a friend or family member how they are and more times than we all can count, I bet they respond to that question with “busy”. You know, it goes something like this:

You: What are you up to this weekend?

Friend: Oh, I’m really busy.

You: We should get together and try out that new restaurant!

Friend: Yeah, I definitely want to, but I’m so busy the next few weeks so we’ll have to plan it out a couple of months.

What is this? Have you had these types of interactions?

They seem all too familiar I bet. I also am willing to take a bet that you and I have both asked the question AND also been the person responding with the “busy” statement instead of actually even answering the question thrown your way of what your plans are for the weekend. Am I right?

Here’s the thing though, life is TOO Short to be stuck on auto pilot through it. Time connecting with our loved ones is TOO short. Time spent doing the things we love is too short. Our lives are so much more than scheduling the next 5 years of it out, always being on the go, or trying to achieve, get, and accomplish every minute of the day.

Look around you. No, reeaaaallllly, stop reading this and look around you right now. What do you see? Maybe it’s your computer monitor at work, an empty coffee cup sitting next to you, a messy kitchen table top, the smell of crisp air coming through your open windows, or the TV broadcasting Wheel of Fortune in the background.  When was the last time you stopped to really REALLY notice these things? These are the everyday moments of our lives, but these are the everyday moments that are so much more important to us when they are gone. These are the moments, the things, and the experiences that are small but meaningful. These are the moments worth celebrating more often.  Think about it, you may not always have the opportunity to have healthy hands that can clean up that kitchen table of yours or the ability to pay for electricity to have your TV running in the background of your apartment.

You don’t have to wait for something big to happen in your life in order to celebrate it. You don’t have to wait until you accomplish something monumental in your life to celebrate. What are you waiting for right now? It’s time to stop waiting and start experiencing every single day of your life. Turn off the auto pilot. Life is filled with these meaningful moments every single day that are worth recognizing and finding time to celebrate them each week which is exactly what I do. I celebrate life and all of it’s beautiful mess each and every week.

You’re probably thinking, “Wait a second, you actually celebrate each week? How do you have time for that?”

I will tell you exactly how I do it. I choose to make time for it because everything worthwhile to you, you find a way to make time for that. You commit to that choice.

Here’s my once a week celebration routine:

  • Get a supply of champagne in your home. (I like to go the thrifty route of getting it at Trader Joe’s so it doesn’t break my budget.)
  • Think about what you want to celebrate that week and keep a little notebook that you write it down in and date it. And actually write it down. It’s fun to look back and see all the things going well in your life, the things that make you excited, or the things that keep you motivated towards making your dreams a reality.
  • Pour yourself a glass of champagne and say cheers! Enjoy your glass of champagne as you celebrate your small but mighty moment of the week.

Life is worth celebrating everything it has to give as often as we can because before we know it, that chance for us will all be gone. Take time to celebrate it right now and make a commitment to do it often. We each have so much to celebrate. Celebrate by yourself or invite a friend over to celebrate with you. And it doesn’t have to be with champagne like my celebration routine. You can celebrate with a good long walk, buying yourself fresh flowers, enjoying a gourmet bar of chocolate, or even an evening of reading your favorite book without guilt of what you think you should be doing instead. Do it in a way that feels good to you.

Still having trouble thinking of things to celebrate each week? Here’s a short list of things I have actually taken the time to celebrate each week because in some way, shape, or form, these are things that have meaning in my life.

  • The countdown to Christmas
  • Seeing a dolphin in person
  • My puppy dog, Boots, didn’t have any accidents in the apartment

No matter how you decide to celebrate, first commit to how often you want to take time to celebrate whether that’s daily, weekly, or monthly for you. Then schedule those times in your planner and choose to make them a priority. After you have planned your celebration moments, stock your shelves with whatever you need and fully enjoy the moment. By taking time to celebrate the little moments in life, it will give you the momentum to keep working towards your goals and to make your dreams a reality.

How do you plan on celebrating this week? I would love to hear all about it! If you need some champagne encouragement, here are 5 champagne recipes that I love using for celebration routine each week. They are so quick to whip up (no mess, no fuss) and absolutely delicious!

  1. What a refreshing and uplifting idea! This week, I could celebrate:

    – Finding myself an apartment (my first one to have on my own!!!) that’s within walking distance to my new grad school in Minnesota
    – Taking my car into the shop to get checked out, and having the repair bill be pretty low.
    – Taking the time to reconnect with three old friends
    – Being surprised with gluten free rolls (I have celiac disease) from my favorite bakery for Easter

I’m going to try making a list of what I could celebrate at the end of every week from now on. Thank you for the inspiration!
