The Essential Way to Get Rid of Your Clutter

Have you ever felt like you have too much clutter in your house, around your apartment, or even at your desk at work? Sometimes that clutter gets in the way of things. We can’t find something, it’s hard to move around, and everything is out of sync and a bit more challenging to get done with so many obstacles in the way. What if we removed that clutter? Wouldn’t it feel like a big dose of freedom?

Clutter can be more than the physical objects in our lives getting in the way.

Our mind can also be cluttered with all sorts of thoughts spinning around and our heart can be cluttered with many different feelings too. How do we free ourselves of this type of clutter? We physically can’t throw it away. We can’t toss it to someone else like a game of hot potato. It feels like we can’t let go. It’s like it has made its home inside of us as a fence. Fences after fences of clutter are built around us and preventing us from getting to who we really are and we can’t break down those fences to let them go.

Hang with me here, those fences are the layers of each of us. Each fence we break down (clutter we break through) we get to know more of who we TRULY are at our deepest core. How do we tear down those fences and work through that clutter? We have to do the inside work. AND I mean REALLY do the inside work. We have to be present and heighten our awareness about who we are, what we enjoy, and how we want to BE every day.

Some of us may have a lot of fences to work through still, and it’s okay for us work slowly to tear down those fences one wooden post at a time. The important piece is that we start.

As I’ve been tearing down my own fences and getting more and more aware of who I am at my core being, it’s led me to realize I want to let go of that clutter and break down more than one of those fences surrounding me. I want to let go of that clutter in a meaningful way that will make the way I live my life going forward feel different and lead to feeling more freedom.

What did I do to physically let go of my own clutter I’m working through?

The clutter in my lifeI wrote out all the clutter in my mind and heart that is no longer serving me in my life and that is not a part of who I am at my core being. I wrote down over 10 different fences (clutter) that have been blocking me and that I want to let go of in order to move forward on my own personal journey. Because sometimes it’s more impactful for us to physically write them out instead of just saying, “I will no longer let people’s perceptions of me dictate how I choose to live my life.”

Once I wrote each thing down, I wanted to let go of it, so I headed to the nearest Party City supply store. Time to celebrate right? Sort of. I went there to continue my letting go process so I grabbed a big bunch of balloons. Next, I headed up to my favorite little secret spot that I like to go to in order to quietly think which overlooks the beautiful downtown city of Saint Paul. As I was driving up there thinking about how I’m finally going to move on and free myself of this clutter, a song came on the radio. Not just any song, but one of my favorite songs by Ben Rector that I had never heard on the radio before (I always have this song playing on my Spotify). The song is called Brand New. How fitting, right? Instantly the tears ran down my face because some of these things I was letting go of were pretty heavy and yet I was so excited to live BRAND NEW. It’s my brand new me and my brand new life.

As I got to my secret spot, I attached all of my clutter pieces of paper (AKA fences) to the balloons. I walked over to the edge of the park and I let them fly away!

I LET MY CLUTTER GO. I FINALLY GAVE MYSELF THE PERMISSION TO LET IT GO.

Picked up the balloons. Got to my secret spot. Let it go & watched my clutter fly away.

That was the most impactful part. A lot of times, we wait for people in our lives to give us the permission to do something or to stop doing something, but this time, I gave myself permission. I gave myself permission to be who I truly am. I have never felt more empowered, free, and at peace than when I believed in my own self and honored my own ability to give myself permission to let it go.

HOW CAN YOU LET YOUR OWN CLUTTER GO?

There are many different ways of letting go. It’s important when we go through this impactful process that we pick a way that is most meaningful to us. Here are some other ways you can let go:

  • Make a list of the things you want to let go of, put them in a sealed bottle and let it go into a river to float away or into the ocean.
  • Write down your clutter and physically burn that piece of paper and watch it go away.
  • Make a list of things or find symbolic pieces of what you want to let go of, put them in a box, and bury them in the ground.

Pick a way that best suits you and your life. Take the time for you and to give yourself the permission you have been looking for.

We must make a choice to take a chance or our life will never change.

Let me know how you let your clutter go! I would love to hear about it. Shoot me a quick note at hello@amandabeilke.com and let me know!
